Adv. Kurt Worrall-Clare: HASA CEO

Adv. K. Worrall-Clare is also the Chairman of the Private Health Forum (PHF) which represents the interests of private health in South Africa. He is a respected commentator on health related law with numerous academic publications. He has also taught courses in healthcare policy and ethics.

Kurt has the following degrees and qualifications: BA (Humanities), Postgraduate LLB, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Forensic Auditing and Criminal Justice. He is currently completing his MA in Applied Ethics (Biomedical) for Professionals at the University of the Witwatersrand.

In October 1998 he was admitted as an Advocate of the High Court. He lectured part-time at the University of Durban-Westville in the Faculty of Public Law and at the University of Natal (Durban) in the Faculty of Procedural Law before joining Hasa as an Executive Officer. In his work on legislative development and interpretation, he formalised the concept of a Children’s Commissioner which was initially considered for the Provincial Constitution of KwaZulu-Natal, and currently enshrined in the Provincial Constitution of the Western Cape. Before joining Hasa he also served as special legal advisor to several members of parliament.

He was also one of 47 international young achievers recognised for outstanding “social entrepreneurship”. This achievement saw the young Kurt appointed as a member of the International Common Futures Forum. His interests include mental health parity, writing, academic research and genealogy.



 

 

Dr Nicola Theron: Director, Econex

Nicola Theron is a co-founder and the managing director of Econex. She is also an extraordinary senior lecturer at the University of Stellenbosch where she teaches Competition Economics courses. She holds a Masters degree in Economics (cum laude) from the University of Pretoria, and a PhD (Economics) from the University of Stellenbosch.

Dr. Theron has been involved right from the beginning with the new Competition dispensation in South Africa. She was the expert economist for the first large merger handled by the new Competition Authorities at the end of 1999 (Santam and Guardian National Insurance). Since then, she has provided expert witness and  numerous economic reports for many large clients in proceedings before the Competition Commission and Competition Tribunal.

She was also involved as an economist in the regulatory battle around the new Medicine Pricing Regulations. She testified on behalf of New Clicks before the government Medicine Pricing Committee, on the economic effects of the new legislation. More recently she has been actively involved in health research and more specifically at the economic impact of the proposed National Health Insurance scheme. Dr. Theron has given lectures and read papers on the Economics of Competition Policy for numerous students, academics, research institutions and at local and international conferences. She also served as a part-time member of the Competition Tribunal. 



 

 

Yolanda Walsh: Facilitator Clinical Projects, Medi-clinic

Newly appointed Clinical Projects Facilitator for Medi-Clinic and will head up the implementation of the Best Care Always Campaign in Medi-Clinic.

2006 – 2010: Critical Care Nurse at the Medi-Clinic Learning Centre Cape Region. Currently busy with a MPhil in Health Sciences Education.

2001 – 2006: Critical Care Nurse at Vergelegen Medi-Clinic in the multi-disciplinary unit. Obtained a HonsBCur (Critical Care Nursing) from Stellenbosch University in 2003.

Monyebodi Ngoepe: Medi-clinic

Monyebodi Ngoepe grew up and matriculated in Polokwane and completed her 4-year Nursing Diploma at the Lebone College of Nursing in 1990. She subsequently completed a Diploma in Operating Theatre Nursing Science in 1993 and a BCUR Degree at UNISA in 1997.

On completion of her nursing studies, Monyebodi started her career at Johannesburg Hospital as a Professional Nurse in Theatre. After 3 years she was promoted to a Senior Professional Nurse. One year later, 1 June 1994 she joined Pietersburg Private Hospital as a Scrub Sister (which subsequently became Limpopo Medi-Clinic). In February 1998 she was promoted to the position of Unit Manager (Theatre). In July 1999 she was promoted to the position of Deputy Nursing Manager (Theatre). After 1 year she took up the position of Nursing Manager. 6 years later, 1 June 2007, she took up the position of Regional Nursing Manager for the Western Cape Region which she still holds.

She serves on the Forum for Professional Nurse Leaders, Western Cape Region since November 2009 as the Vice Chairperson.

Monyebodi is married with 1 son. Apart from spending time with her family, an important anchor in her life, Monyebodi enjoys watching movies, reading and travelling.



 

 

Dr Vincent Maphai: Dinokeng Scenarios, SABMiller

Vincent Maphai first joined the South African Breweries Limited (SAB Ltd) in 1998 when he was appointed corporate affairs director.

He held this position until 2004, when assumed responsibility as executive chairman of BHPBilliton Southern Africa.

The son of marginally educated shebeen owners, Vincent grew up to become a highly regarded academic who held fellowships at Harvard (1988), Princeton (1989) and Stanford (1995). From 1991 to 1994 he was associate professor and head of the political science department at the University of the Western Cape.

In 1996 he joined the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) as executive director of social dynamics. The HSRC seconded him to head up the Presidential Review Commission, a body set up by then president Nelson Mandela to investigate government restructuring and service delivery. From 1996 to 1998 he was professor extraordinaire in the Department of Political Science at the University of South Africa (UNISA).

Vincent served a term as chairman of the SABC from 1999 - 2003.

He is currently chairman of the National Responsible Gambling Programme (NRGP) which is acknowledged globally as one of the most effective programmes of its kind.

In March 2009 he was re-appointed to SAB to take up the position of executive director of corporate affairs and transformation.

Vincent graduated from UNISA with BA degree in 1975. He then studied at the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium where he completed a Bachelor of Philosophy cum laude in 1976. This was followed by a Master’s Degree in Philosophy magna cum laude in 1978 from the same university. He holds a PhD from the University of Natal, an honours degree in international politics from UNISA and completed an advanced management programme at Harvard University.

In February March 2009 Vincent has returned to SAB in the capacity of Executive Director of Corporate Affairs and Transformation.



 

 

Bode Olajumoke: Health Actuary, Alexander Forbes Health (Pty) Ltd

Bode is a Healthcare Actuary at Alexander Forbes in Johannesburg. He is involved in strategic healthcare initiatives for Clients and Government agencies providing or seeking to provide healthcare solutions to their employees in sub Saharan Africa; particularly Nigeria, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Kenya, and Botswana.

As a way of building awareness in the African healthcare space, he has recently authored a series of newsletters to keep clients up to date on industry trends and healthcare solutions that are available to them, most recently his article on Private vs. Public Healthcare partnerships which has generated attention in both the media and in this conference. These articles are available upon request.

Bode obtained a Bachelor’s degree at the College of Insurance (New York, USA) in Actuarial Sciences in 1993 and further developed academic qualifications by successfully completing a Masters Degree in International Finance at Fordham University, New York, USA in 1996. He is a qualified Fellow Actuary under the United States’ Society of Actuaries.



 

 

Eileen Brannigan: Group Nursing Director for Netcare, Clinic Holdings

Born in Zambia and bred in Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa, Eileen spent a year in the United States as an American Field Scholar, before completing her B.Soc.Sc (Nursing) degree at the University of Natal and Addington Hospital.

She worked at Addington in Trauma and Maternity for a while before moving into Occupational Health Nursing in Pinetown.

She then joined the S.A. Nursing Association in 1982, holding the positions of Regional Manager, Socio-Economic Manager, Deputy Director and then acting Executive Director. She was also joint Acting Executive Director of the Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA) during the transformation process. She was also an elected member of the SA Nursing Council from 2002 to mid-2007.

Along the way she collected a Diploma in Industrial Relations and an LLB degree, and has just completed a B.Sc (Hons) degree through City University in London. She has written numerous articles and presented papers on a number of nursing and related health issues. She also serves on the Board of Wits Hospice, is a member of the Africa Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau, and is on the advisory panel for the SA chapter of the Joanna Briggs Institute for Evidence Based Practice. She currently serves on a Dept of Health task team looking at Human Resources in Health, and in particular nursing staffing norms.

Eileen joined Clinic Holdings in 1997 and is currently Group Nursing Director for Netcare. She was appointed as a Director of the Netcare Hospital Management in March 2002, and a Director of General Healthcare Holdings in the UK in 2007.



 

 

Dr Elizabeth Catharina (Eloise) van Niekerk: National Nurse Manager, Life Healthcare

Dr Eloïse van Niekerk functions as the head of Nursing for the Life Healthcare Group for the past 10 years with 35 years of experience in the nursing profession as:

Dr van Niekerk obtained her PHD in Development of a Management model for nursing in Life Healthcare.



 

 

Mr Neil Kirby: Director, Werksmans

Neil is an environmental law specialist, both in theory and practice. He studied environmental law as part of his LLB and LLM degrees, both from the University of the Witwatersrand, and has a certificate in Environmental Law, also from that university. He has headed Werksmans’ Environment practice area as well as its Health, Pharmaceutical & Life Sciences practice area since 2000.

Neil has also published numerous articles on environmental, healthcare, administrative and constitutional law matters and is frequently invited to speak at national and international seminars and workshops. He is named as a leading lawyer in Dispute Resolution by Chambers Global, The World’s Leading Lawyers for Business (2008).



 

 

Dr Nkaki Matlala: Chairperson, HASA

Dr Nkaki Matlala MSc, MMed(Surgery), FCS(SA). Nkaki is a qualified surgeon. He was deputy president of the National Medical and Dental Association, an alternative medical association during the apartheid era. He was active in overseeing the mental and physical health of apartheid detainees .He is a member of the Presidential Medical Panel, responsible for the Presidential health care. He is also former member of the SAMA Private Practice Committee. After several years in surgical academia and private surgical practice, Dr Matlala took up a position as a director of clinical relations at Mediclinic Limited .He is presently the Chief Clinical Officer of Mediclinic(SA)and sits on its board. He also sits on several company boards including Phodiso Holdings; Hospital Association of South Africa; Ububele Holdings . He is also chairman of the Umnotho We Sizwe Group, a junior mining company.

Dr Matlala is a member of the following professional associations,viz SAMA, South African Association of Surgeons and the Trauma Society Of South Africa.He is also a reservist Major in the South African Medical Health Services (SAMHS).

Dr Dena van den Bergh: General Manager, Life Healthcare

Dr Dena van den Bergh has over 26 years successful professional experience in the private healthcare sector including 10 years as member of the Life Healthcare Executive Team. She has also served as managing Director of Afrox Pharmacy Management Services, MD of Direct Medicines and as an Honorary Lecturer in pharmacology at Wits Medical School. Her outstanding academic record includes a doctoral degree in Engineering from Warrick University in the UK, a master’s degree in Pharmacology and an honours degree in Pharmacy, which she achieved with numerous distinctions.

Dena’s wide variety of expertise includes extensive knowledge of the healthcare industry. She has been a member of the Board of the Hospital Association of South Africa and is currently chairperson of the HASA quality committee. She is also the Chairperson of the Life College of Nursing and the Life Foundation for Corporate Social Investment (CSI) Committee. Dena has served on the Health Charter Task team and has also played an active role in the NDOH Task Team for the development of the Core Standards for Health facilities. She is currently the Chairperson of the Best Care Always Collaborative Quality improvement campaign that spans both public and private sector.

Her current portfolio as GM National Healthcare Functions includes Quality Management Systems, Nursing Services, Pharmacy Practice, Pharmaceutical Procurement and the Life Clinical Directorate. In this role she is responsible for the development and implementation of the group strategy for these portfolios across the 62 acute care hospitals and over 15 chronic care units. She has been the driver of the Life Healthcare Quality Programme and is passionate about replicating quality management systems across all hospitals and business units in the group in order to continuously elevate patient-centred care and clinical excellence.

Dena has written over 45 articles for professional journals and magazines and has conducted numerous presentations at formal professional and academic conferences both nationally and internationally.

Outside of work, Dena is an internationally certified yoga teacher and is a disciplined and committed practitioner. She is married and has two children age 12 and 13 and enjoys spending time in nature with her family.



 

 

Mr Mark Cutifani: CEO, AngloGold Ashanti

Mark Cutifani was appointed to the board of AngloGold Ashanti on 17 September 2007 and to the position of Chief Executive Officer following the retirement of Bobby Godsell effective 1 October 2007. Prior to joining AngloGold Ashanti, Mark held the position of Chief Operating Officer at CVRD Inco where he was responsible for Inco’s global nickel business. He has been involved in the mining industry since 1976, with considerable experience in gold mining.



 

 

Mr Tony Twine: Director and Senior Economist, Econometrix

Professional Experience:
During the period 1973-1976, Tony Twine worked for the Cape Performing Arts Board in the production department, a direction that he pursued part time for a while after leaving their employment.

He then became Senior Planner at Mobil SA (Pty.) Ltd, an organisation which was on par with the company's divisions in Europe and the rest of the developing world. He left Mobil to join Datsun Nissan (Pty.) Ltd. in 1979 where he progressed to Market Research Manager.

He has contributed many articles to Reuters, Intelligence Magazine, Professional Management Review, Mail & Guardian and the South Africa Journal of International Trade & Investment. He contributes daily political analysis to the Standard & Poor’s MMS service.

In 1983 he established Marketing Environments (Pty) Ltd, an independent consultancy company which largely specialised in consulting on the motor and related industries.

Tony Twine joined forces with Econometrix in 1984.
